What is Storm Zone?
StormZone is an FCAT-compliant supplementary curriculum and hurricane preparedness
program designed specifically for middle and high schools. StormZone is
currently being taught in Broward and Palm Beach Public Schools. With peak
hurricane season occurring in September, the interdisciplinary curriculum
teaches students about the science of hurricanes and the role of emergency
management during a major weather event.
Through classroom simulations, StormZone also provides students with an
opportunity to learn first-hand how to plan, prepare and recover from hurricanes.
After the curriculum is taught, students reconfigure their classroom to
represent an Emergency Management Operations Center, form their own civic
government by electing a Mayor, and assigning the remaining students Emergency
Support Functions (police and fire, housing and shelter, energy services,
health and medical care, food and water, transportation) - roles that are critical to preparing for and recovering from a hurricane. The classroom exercise takes approximately four hours to coordinate.
The program also instructs families on how to prepare for hurricanes. A Family Hurricane Preparedness Plan is provided that can be copied and taken home by the students, to ensure that families are "hurricane ready."
