STEM - School Designation FAQ

Q. What does STEM and STEAM stand for?
A.STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and STEAM adds the A for Arts, inclusive of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA).

Q. What is the difference between the STEAM and STEAM track?
A.STEM’s focus will remain with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics while STEAM’s will additional elements that will focus on the Arts, inclusive of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA).

Q. What is the objective of the STEAM/STEM School Designation program?
A. M-DCPS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEAM/STEM) School Designation program’s primary goal is to promote STEAM/STEM education and integration among its disciplines.

Q. What are the benefits of our school becoming part of the STEAM/STEM School Designation program?
A.Credibility among stake-holders including parents, community and business partners.

Q. How can this program assist us with marketing our school?
A.Schools will be promoted to the community through the STEAM/STEM School Designation website and highlighted through social media.

Q. How can we utilize social media to follow the STEAM/STEM School Designation program and how can we utilize social media to promote STEAM/STEM activities at my school site?

Q. How will STEAM/STEM School Designation impact professional growth?
A.Liaisons and teachers will have the opportunity to participate in STEAM/STEM professional developments such as STEAM/STEM School Designation Liaison, Science Fair, SECME trainings and STEAM Expo.

Q. Where and when will the STEAM Expo take place?
A. The 2018 STEM Expo will take place at Miami-Dade College’s North Campus on Saturday, February 10th, 2018.

Q. What are the three levels of STEAM/STEM that my school can earn?
A. The three levels of designation are Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Q. Who selects the STEAM/STEM School Designation Liaison?
A. The liaison is selected by the principal or designee.

Q. What are the responsibilities of the STEAM/STEM School Designation Liaison?
A.Serve as the lead at the school site in the process and submit artifacts and evidence to quantify the level of integration among STEAM/STEM disciplines.

Q. Where would I find the rubrics for my school?

Q. We are a multi-level school, what rubrics do we utilize?
A.Multi-leveled schools will follow rubrics that apply to them.  For example, a 6-12 multi-level school will follow the Middle School (6-8) and the High School (9-12) rubrics.

Q. We are a charter school may we participate in the process and is there a fee?
A.Yes, Miami-Dade County Public Schools is working closely with the Charter School Office and charter schools can participate in the process.  Additionally, for the fees and information utilize the link below for more information;

Q. We are charter school and we have two school numbers.  Do we need to send two fees?
A.Yes, a set of fees correlates to the school site number.  So, if your school has two number two sets of fees are needed.

Q. We are ready to send the check, when do we send it?
A. Feel free to send the check only while the application window is open.  Please avoid sending it too early or too late as we need to follow M-DCPS’ guidelines.

Q. I would like to request a visit from the STEAM/STEM School Designation team for our annual STEAM/STEM Review, what do I do?
A. You need to select your dates from our “Visit-Application” menu.  Here is the link:

Q. If I choose a date for a visit, does that guarantee that chosen date?
A.The team will try to visit on the requested dates.  However, it does not guarantee that the dates are available.

Q. We chose a date but I realized it will not work for our school due to testing, what do we do now in order to reschedule?
A.Please contact our office to discuss the need to reschedule the visit.

Q. We would like to nominate our school as the STEAM/STEM School of the month? 
A.Please email our office to nominate your school and why should you be chosen.

Q. Who selects the STEAM/STEM School Liaison of the month?
The STEAM/STEM School Liaison of the month is selected by the STEAM/STEM School Designation team.

Q. We would like to highlight and showcase a great activity at my school?
A.Please email our office with a paragraph as to what took place and at least three pictures.
